Development of the darkmatter Project

  • Add Abstract to be submitted for Articles on Journal Submission - submit work page/section
  • Update peer review info on Submission page & link to wiki
  • Explore alternative self-hosted (CMS?) solution for Editorial Team admin & communications, instead of relying on google services - e.g. test Elgg
  • Check journal citation indexing, e.g. google scholar and pdf indexing/archiving
  • Shifting to more advanced web-host: WebFaction - faster site, greater flexibility in running software; though requires recruiting a darkmatter developer with experience of server shell commands, installing software from source etc.
  • Use SSL https:
  • Tracking incoming emails & inquiries/workflow; current solution of a single email clunky
  • Integrating various online activities: group communication; journal site; incoming email; workflow; wiki; bug tracking; file sharing etc; currently fragmented with different software & different logins
  • Open bank account (Co-Op) - done
  • Check on acquiring Charity status: not pursuing

The darkmatter Journal is hosted on a relatively inexpensive shared hosting environment, and currently uses the software platform Wordpress:

  • Add link to wiki on menu bar
  • Upgrade Wordpress to current version (& multisite?)
  • Set up staging site for testing WP
  • Automate Site Backup
  • Set up an issue/bugtracker for WP (or simply have a section of a discussion board?)
  • Host darkmatter WordPress code changes on GitHub?
  • Check commentpress for peer review via Wordpress site
  • Add donate button (check on methods in addition to paypal)
  • Test/add OAI plugin for archiving journal content via DOAJ
  • AddThis plugin (and facebook Share vs. Like button; adding Google+ button)? - problem with privacy
  • Plugin: paragraph level permanent links -
  • Privacy issues/tracking when using FB share (like) & Twitter buttons? Alternative code such as shareNice or socialshareprivacy, else recommend to readers Firefox plugin ShareMeNot
  • Not using Gmail for group communications and inquiries
  • Get rid of Google analytics tracking and switch to open source/self-hosted Piwik
  • Make WP more secure (change some backend stuff)
  • Add PDF & EPub download plugins (find ones that work for multiple authors) - do after upgrading Wordpress
  • Add citation (reference for an article) at end of a post page
  • Plugin for custom ordering posts (not based on date)
  • Explore replacing comments section with Disqus because of its integration with other social media; though consider privacy issues

Test software for dev-discussion list - needs to be free/open-source and ideally self-hosted with features enabling posting via email and via a web interface (forum/archive):

  • - has a good set of features though limited discussion board
  • bbpress - integrates well with wordpress, need to check features
  • googlegroups - commercial/evil/ads! but has good features, similar to a forum for posting via web
  • Mailman - self-hosted; widely used & solid but basic, with limited archive & no web reply interface; can use Mail Archive for a searchable public archive; Mailman v3 has better features though not hosted yet on webfaction
  • - good features but complex installation for a small group
  • JISCMail (Listserv type hosted) - similar to mailman, but does have web interface, though clunky
  • Sympa - self-hosted & fully featured with web interface, but complex to install for small group
  • Riseup - free hosted solution by net activists, uses Sympa mail list, has web interface
  • Dada Mail - self-hosted, good features though no reply via web interface
